Symbolic Space is a client-driven experiential approach to exploring and developing the self. Developed by a cognitive psychologist, the approach allows a participant to inquire into deep personal symbols, metaphors, and their unique embodied knowledge. Symbolic Space work is guided by an experienced and knowledgeable facilitator within a safe and contained space. Through experiences within Symbolic Space, a client builds deeper, more meaningful connections with the self and the world.
The Symbolic Space approach is rooted in cognitive science and animistic techniques. These techniques allow a facilitator to help a participant become aware of sensations from non-linguistic parts of the mind and body. The participant has an opportunity to experience them within a safe space and to integrate this experience into conscious knowledge. Thus, a client experiences the shift within Symbolic Space. In contrast to simply imagining the desired change and/or talking about what needs to happen, the participant lives through the change during a session. This allows the conscious mind to integrate this lived-through experience into personal knowledge and memory, and use it to guide future behaviours and choices in life.
